little blue village in the sky

A Rotterdam family realized they had a space problem as their eldest son reached his teenage years and the old garden shed that he and his younger brother had been sharing as a bedroom was no longer adequate. The family lived in a loft, above the family business so there weren't many options. Then they remembered something an old friend had said, they should expand to the roof. Well, that old friend was Winy Maas, who had since garnered attention as a principal architect at MVRDV. They gave him a call and Maas took it from there.

Maas created almost an entire second structure ontop of the existing one. Three pseudo-detached houselike rooms create a "village." They resemble the houses from Monopoly, multiplied x 10000000000 and blue. Each bedroom/miniature house has its own spiral staircase from the main loft. I LOVE the stairs.
